Hiring Managing Director

Lake Institute on Faith & Giving – within the first-of-its-kind Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy – invites applications for the full-time position of Managing Director in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The Opportunity

For over two decades, Lake Institute has engaged scholars, practitioners and communities to foster greater understanding about the ways that faith inspires and informs generosity. To fulfill this mission, the Managing Director will provide leadership for strategic operations, team learning and team cohesiveness, and new partnerships across specific sectors. The Managing Director will supervise Lake’s team of four associate directors (research, education, engagement, and operations), clarifying and applying Lake’s financial model and decision-making priorities across divisions, creating opportunities for shared learning and collaboration, and guiding the team on cross-divisional events and projects. The Managing Director will also play a key external role as well, representing Lake Institute in public settings and taking the lead on developing new partnerships with national philanthropic, religious, and nonprofit organizations. This position will call for deft leadership of teams, proven capacity for public outreach and partnership building, clear communication, and a sustaining interest in the complex relationship between faith and giving and the common good.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Represent Lake in diverse external contexts and develop new partnerships with national philanthropic and nonprofit organizations and/or inter-religious networks.
  • Strengthen relationships across areas of Lake work and develop team practices to encourage mutual learning and creativity.
  • Supervise Associate Directors (Operations, Research, Education, Engagement); clarify, communicate, and apply Lake’s financial model and decision-making priorities across internal divisions.
  • Build and develop Lake’s capacity for new initiatives and resource development, taking lead on specific projects and ensuring the team is supported through external contractors.
  • Lead team on event planning for public programs such as Lake Lecture and Distinguished Visitors; Identify strategic opportunities for additional convenings on plan for public engagement with Director.

Qualifications

Master’s degree from an accredited institution, plus a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in the nonprofit and religious sector with emphasis on management, curriculum development, community engagement, marketing, and adult education. Master’s in Theology, Divinity, or Religious Studies preferred. Professional Doctorate (Ed.D., D. Min., or Ph.D.) preferred.

Salary & Benefits

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Benefits will include health care; life and disability insurance; 403(b) retirement plan with employer contribution up to 10% of salary; tuition benefit; paid time off and paid holidays according to Indiana University policy.
