Meet Rabbi Adam Miller, Vice Chair of Lake Institute’s Board of Advisors, who has made a significant impact during his five years of service. In this Q&A, Rabbi Miller reflects on his decision to join the Board, highlights the Lake’s role in advancing the field, and discusses the emerging trends in faith and giving that inspire him.
Why did you initially decide to join the Board of Advisors?
As a past participant in the Executive Certificate in Religious Fundraising (ECRF) course, I was grateful for the opportunity to develop my understanding of the way that faith and generosity intersect. I want to support similar resources and opportunities for others to follow this same path, and for research into ways that we can further understand this area.
What do you think is Lake Institute’s greatest contribution to the field of faith and giving?
Lake Institute recognizes that generosity is part of our faith. As a result, its greatest achievement is removing the misunderstood perception that there is a stigma to development in the faith world. Instead, it teaches faith leaders to be able to use their traditions, their stories and narratives to invite others to be part of using their resources to fulfill the organization’s vision for how its values will shape the future. In essence, how to create partners for making our world more whole and holy in the future.
What emerging trends or topics are you most excited about within the field of faith and giving?
The projected wealth and philanthropy in the coming years is simply staggering. There is an opportunity for all faith based organizations to embrace a mindset of abundance, and engage constructively with those seeking to share their resources. Faith and value based giving has the potential to overcome the mindset of fear that can lead to divisions and separation.
In addition to leading his congregation in Naples, Florida, his work with Lake Institute, URJ Camp Coleman and the Central Conference of American Rabbis, Rabbi Adam Miller is a podcast host and producer. His two series, “One Spark at a Time” and the newly released “4 Questions” are available on Apple & Spotify. He also produces the “Little Man Big Mouth” sports podcast hosted by his son.
